Spatial Heat Vulnerability of Unsheltered Populations in Los Angeles

Course: GEOG 6550 / Spatial Analysis This project developed a spatial vulnerability model to identify areas of Los Angeles where unsheltered individuals face the greatest risk during extreme heat events. Using census data, shelter locations, cooling center data, and temperature surfaces, a composite vulnerability index was created to guide resource allocation decisions. Methods: Multi-criteria spatial analysis, vulnerability index construction, kernel density estimation of shelter access, raster overlay and weighted scoring, ArcGIS Pro. Key Findings: High-vulnerability clusters were identified in downtown LA and eastern neighborhoods. Areas with high heat exposure and low shelter access showed compounding risk. Maps reveal spatial mismatches between need and resource distribution.
